Engineering doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2023.11.007

Abstract:

This study systematically introduces the development of the world's first full-link and full-system ground demonstration and verification system for the OMEGA space solar power satellite (SSPS). First, the OMEGA 2.0 innovation design was proposed. Second, field-coupling theoretical models of sunlight concentration, photoelectric conversion, and transmitting antennas were established, and a systematic optimization design method was proposed. Third, a beam waveform optimization methodology considering both a high beam collection efficiency and a circular stepped beam shape was proposed. Fourth, a control strategy was developed to control the condenser pointing toward the sun while maintaining the transmitting antenna toward the rectenna. Fifth, a high-efficiency heat radiator design method based on bionics and topology optimization was proposed. Sixth, a method for improving the rectenna array’s reception, rectification, and direct current (DC) power synthesis efficiencies is presented. Seventh, high-precision measurement technology for high-accuracy beam-pointing control was developed. Eighth, a smart mechanical structure was designed and developed. Finally, the developed SSPS ground demonstration and verification system has the capacity for sun tracking, a high concentration ratio, photoelectric conversion, microwave conversion and emission, microwave reception, and rectification, and thus satisfactory results were obtained.

A prototype online database-enabled design framework for wind analysis/design of low-rise buildings

Dae Kun KWON,Ahsan KAREEM,Deepak KUMAR,Yukio TAMURA

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2016, Volume 10, Issue 1,   Pages 121-130 doi: 10.1007/s11709-015-0329-3

Abstract: This study presents a development of an advanced cyberbased database-enabled design module for low-rise buildings (DEDM-LR) which provides estimation of the wind-induced responses for main wind force resisting frames by making direct use of pressure time histories measured at a large number of pressure taps over a suite of building models. These responses may be considered in lieu of code-specified load effects in which the overall accuracy may be influenced by the inherent simplifications in codes. In addition, this new automated approach is particularly attractive and advantageous as it allows a web-based online analysis/design via intuitive user-friendly interfaces for both the input and output in terms of familiar web-style forms that are nowadays very common in most of web-based services. Presently, the DEDM-LR hosts an aerodynamic database developed by the Tokyo Polytechnic University (TPU), Japan for a variety of building configurations like flat, gable, and hip roofs under suburban terrain flow condition with immediate application to other databases. The paper shows the efficacy and validity of the DEDM-LR by walking through its details and examples on selected gable-roofed buildings. The architecture of DEDM-LR platform offers the ability to pool resources by hosting other databases that may become available in the near future.

Transparent Thermally Tunable Microwave Absorber Prototype Based on Patterned VO2 Film Article

Engineering 2023, Volume 29, Issue 10,   Pages 198-206 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2022.10.005

Abstract:

Transparent microwave absorbers that exhibit high optical transmittance and microwave absorption capability are ideal, although having a fixed absorption performance limits their applicability. Here, a simple, transparent, and thermally tunable microwave absorber is proposed, based on a patterned vanadium dioxide (VO2) film. Numerical calculations and experiments demonstrate that the proposed VO2 absorber has a high optical transmittance of 84.9% at 620 nm; its reflection loss at 15.06 GHz can be thermally tuned from –4.257 to –60.179 dB, and near-unity absorption is achieved at 523.75 K. Adjusting only the patterned VO2 film duty cycle can change the temperature of near-unity absorption. Our VO2 absorber has a simple composition, a high optical transmittance, a thermally tunable microwave absorption performance, a large modulation depth, and an adjustable temperature tuning range, making it promising for application in tunable sensors, thermal emitters, modulators, thermal imaging, bolometers, and photovoltaic devices.

Inhibition of FLT3: A Prototype for Molecular Targeted Therapy in Acute Myeloid Leukemia Review

Meira Yisraeli Salman, Jacob M. Rowe, Nir Weigert

Engineering 2021, Volume 7, Issue 10,   Pages 1354-1368 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2021.05.020

Abstract:

Modern therapy of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) began in 1973 with the first report of the successful combination of daunorubicin and cytarabine, which led to complete remission in approximately 45% of patients. Accurate AML diagnosis was dependent on morphology, aided initially only by cytochemistry. Unlike acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), immunophenotyping offered little in the diagnosis of AML, at least during the 1970s and 1980s. The advent of reliable cytogenetics changed the entire prognostic outlook of AML. With karyotypic analysis, different groups of AML could be classified and stratified for various therapies. Unique mutational profiling was a major advance in further categorizing AML patients, aided by the immunophenotypic identification of antigenic markers on the cells. All these advances were occurring as the understanding of the importance of the tumor burden—known as minimal residual disease (MRD)—became crucial for the management of AML patients. The efficacy of MRD has rapidly progressed in the past decade, from a specificity of 10−3 with immunophenotyping to 10−4 with polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which is only appropriate for some patients with AML, and finally to 10−5 or even 10−6 cells with the extraordinary sensitivity of next-generation sequencing (NGS). All of these advances have promoted the concept of personalized medicine, which has led to the advent of targeted agents that can accurately be used for specific diagnostic subtypes. Responses can be predicted and measured accurately. Such targeted agents have now become a cornerstone in the management of AML, increasing efficacy and dramatically reducing toxicity. The focus of this review is on one of the most well-studied targeted agents in AML: the FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) inhibitors, which have impacted the prognostication and therapeutics of AML. This review selectively discusses the FLT3 inhibitors in detail, as a model for the other burgeoning targeted agents that have already been approved, as well as those that are currently in development.
